grown-up forts

Tea party in a fort, Lissy Elle on Flickr
Back on Evening Trail in my home town of Spring, Texas, my childhood friend and I would make a fort that spanned her entire living room. I'm talking clothespins in the ceiling, every sheet in the house, turned over coffee-table-turned headboard, four bedroom fort. (How great were her parents to let us do this, meanwhile?)

So I wonder, if something so simple brought us so much joy, why don't we do it as grown ups? It could be so magical - blankets, pillows, a string of lights, music...Who cares that we have to rearrange the living room furniture and do some laundry? Here's some inspiration that may help you tap into that old childhood feeling.

stripes and florals

Jazmin Barakha embroidery via Leslie Shewring's pin
I can't help it - I'm a girly girl. And you'll probably notice an overload of flowers, feminine colors and sparkle on my blog. Again, I can't help it. It's beyond my control. But there's something about the combination of stripes and florals that I'm completely obsessed with, and I can't keep it to myself any longer. So here you go - a collection of photos I've been swooning over that have the perfect amount of bold stripes and girly florals.

sweet paul

All images from Sweet Paul Magazine
Paul Lowe (aka Sweet Paul) has a way with imagery. And design. And food. And styling. He does it all, really. And he captures all that beauty in one digital publication: Sweet Paul Magazine. Lucky for you, the Spring 2012 issue is now available. If this doesn't get you in the mood for Spring, then I don't know what will.

etsy treasury: woodland fairy tale

Bridal lace headpiece "Queen Anne" by WhichGoose

You're never too old to wish you lived in a fairy tale. Only now, our fairy tales are more stylish, romantic and sophisticated. And Prince Charming is played by Jean Dujardin (did I mention my fairy tale was French?) But the allure of the princess in the woods awaiting her prince remains true, and images such as these make it seem almost attainable. Almost.

Confetti Lolly Bags, Poppies for Grace
What better way to celebrate anything than with confetti? Nowadays, you can find confetti that's hand punched in any shape/size; made of tissue paper, mylar or specialty paper; and available in more colors than you can imagine. For our New Year's party this year, I discovered a bag of old-school mylar confetti in my craft closet and sprinkled it on everything. And I mean everything. I was picking it up for days, but it was so worth it because my house looked absolutely fabulous.

Why wasn't I invited? A Beautiful Mess

Confetti also makes a great statement at weddings and bridal/baby showers. So stock up on confetti so you can be prepared to celebrate at a moment's notice. Because you never know when you're going to be asked to host the next game night or your best friend's surprise birthday party.

retro campers

My Vintage Party camper, Intimate Weddings via Andrea's pin
When I call Monsieur Moulin, my ringtone is "Airstream Song," one of my favorites by Miranda Lambert. The first line is, "Sometimes I wish I lived in an Airstream, homemade curtains, lived just like a gypsy." So true. But for now, I'll dream of owning my own retro camper and someday taking off with my husband and pups to travel the country in style. Wouldn't we be so cute? Of course we'd have a glam picnic table and chairs, eclectic indoor furnishings, maybe some bunting or paper lanterns, and fresh flowers daily. I feel like her name should be something girly and quirky like Clementine or Gidget (you name campers like boats, right?)

pink and gold

When you combine girly pink with elegant gold, you can only expect sheer gorgeousness. The duo is so playful and flirty, yet refined and sophisticated. I had a quirky, summer garden party wedding, but if I could do it over again, I might consider this palette. Or maybe I just need to find a reason to throw a party or bridal shower so I can get it out of my system. Either way, I definitely need everything on this page. I always say a girl can never have too much pink or shimmer. Well, I don't always say that, but you get the point.
